Pante Makassar-Ambeno, 29 November 2015 – H.E. the President of the Republic, Taur Matan Ruak, following a visit to the new power plant in Inur Sakato, Pante Makassar, last Thursday, he asked the Atoni people to support the establishment of the Special Social Market Economy Zone (ZEESM) in Oecussi-Ambeno, which is essential for the success of the project.

“As President of the Republic, I ask the people of Oecussi, authorities, scholars, the youth, community leaders, traditional leaders, the population in general, to support the establishment of the ZEEMS. All other municipalities had to tighten their belts so as to save up for Oecussi. This is a great opportunity for the people of Oecussi. The President asks you to contribute to the success of this project,” he said.

On the occasion, the Head of State congratulated the president of the Special Administrative Region Authority of Oecussi-Ambeno (RAEO), Dr. Marí Alkatiri, his team and company Wika for the success of the preparations for the celebration of the 500 years of contact between Timorese and Portuguese people and the 40 years since the Declaration of Independence, in particular for their effort towards finalizing the construction of the new 17.6 MW power plant, which will supply electricity to the whole of Oecussi, on time.

“On my last visit to Oecussi in 2012, many people told me that they wanted to move to Dili to find a job. I promised them that we would bring Dili to Oecussi and today we are witnesses of a huge project,” H.E. the President said, adding that the success of the ZEESM in Oecussi is also a huge success for Timor-Leste, because the main goal of independence is to fight poverty.

The Head of State also visited the construction site of a new bridge, along with a new irrigation system in Mota Tono.

During this visit, H.E. the President was accompanied by the First Lady Isabel Ferreira, the president of RAEO, Dr Marí Alkatiri, the president of National Parliament, Vicente Guterres, Prime Minister Dr Rui Maria Araújo, members of the government and other dignitaries.
